Massage Therapy

What role does massage play in healing and wellness?

According to many studies on the health benefits of massage therapy it has been determined that massages can help and stimulate healing in several ways. Studies have shown that massage helps relieve chronic and acute pain issues by relaxing muscles, so they are able to function properly and without pain. It does this by “breaking apart” tender spots called trigger points that can cause both local and diffuse symptoms, and by promoting better circulation so oxygen-rich blood can reach damaged tissues and fuel the recovery process. And, it also helps by enabling the body to be more efficient at removing built-up toxins that can interfere with muscle function while also contributing to pain and other symptoms. Plus, massage encourages the brain to release “feel good” chemicals that can relieve chronic stress and anxiety, to primary contributors to acute and chronic pain.

What types of massage are there?

One of the benefits of massage is that it can incorporate different strokes and motions as well as reach different depths of tissue to address pain, trigger points, and stiffness wherever these issues may be.  Massage can be used to relieve pain and improve function following traumatic injury or surgery, to help athletes perform at their peak and avoid injury, to reduce symptoms associated with chronic diseases like arthritis and fibromyalgia, and to relieve chronic stress and promote better overall health and wellness.
